Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf is calling on the state attorney general to step down amid the criminal charges filed against her.
Wolf said Thursday that fellow Democrat Kathleen Kane should resign from her elected office because she cannot do the job of the state's top law enforcement officer while facing such serious charges. The offenses include official oppression, obstruction of justice and perjury.Montgomery County prosecutors say Kane leaked secret grand jury information to a political operative to pass to the media in an attempt to embarrass a former state prosecutor she thought made her look bad.Kane continues to maintain her innocence. Her spokesman says she disagrees with Wolf's evaluation.Earlier today, Kane said she's disappointed in the prosecutor's decision to pursue the case."I have maintained my innocence from the day these allegations surfaced and I continue to do so today," Kane said in a statement released after the news conference announcing the charges against her this morning. "I intend to defend myself vigorously against these charges. I look forward to the opportunity to present my case in a public courtroom and move beyond the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that has defined the process to this point."Meanwhile, I remain committed to leading the Office of Attorney General and doing the job the citizens of this commonwealth elected me to do."The 49-year-old Democrat is charged with leaking secret grand jury information to a political operative to pass to the media. Montgomery County Prosecutor Risa Vetri Ferman says Kane was trying to embarrass a former state prosecutor she thought made her look bad.Kane says in a statement that a resignation would be an admission of guilt and she's not guilty. She says the attorney general's office will continue fulfilling its mission to serve residents.
