The triple track crossing project at the entrance of the county-owned parking lot in Jim Thorpe has been completed.

But, officials said, there are still more safety issues that need to be addressed at the location.During the Carbon County Commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board talked about installing a pedestrian cross walk near the triple track crossing, because the new crossing is three feet narrower, making it dangerous for pedestrians to exit while vehicles are entering.Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said the crossing was overlooked at the time of the project design, because it's hard to envision the completed project when on paper.The county doesn't want to have pedestrians traveling the same path as vehicles when entering and exiting the lot because of potential accidents that could occur.Nothstein said the county will now begin looking at a pedestrian cross walk near the entrance.The triple track crossing project has been in the works since 2006.In 2007, the project was rejected for funding by the 2008 Rail Freight Assistance Program grant because it didn't meet the necessary requirements.The county railroad commission reapplied for financial assistance for the project in 2008 for 2009, but again, it was denied.In August, the board of commissioners voted to award the project to W.E. Yoder, Inc., of Kutztown who bid $108,065 on the project. Carbon County and the county railroad commission will share the cost of the project.In other business, the commissioners announced that Renee G. Roberts of Palmerton is the new director of the county Tax Claim Bureau. She is replacing current director Marie Midas, who is retiring. Midas served as director of the bureau since Feb. 5, 2001.Commissioner William O'Gurek, chairman, said the board has "all the confidence in the world in Renee" and knows she will do a good job and keep the bureau operating smoothly.Roberts, who has been employed with the county for 21 years, says the move from assistant director to director is exciting."It's going to be quite a challenge," she said.Roberts will be officially take the director role beginning on Nov. 11.
