SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania Marine who was killed in the Pacific during World War II is returning home.

The Times-Tribune reports the remains of Pfc. Harold Hannon will be returned to Scranton next week, with a funeral Mass and burial to follow.

Hannon was 28 when he was killed in November 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa. The nonprofit organization History Flight Inc. discovered his remains during a search of the atoll in early 2017.

Hannon's nephew, Bill Hannon, will lead a family contingent to meet the remains at Philadelphia International Airport on Wednesday. He says the find "solves a lot of mysteries" about what happened to his uncle, known to family and friends as Tidley.

The Mass and burial for Harold Hannon will be held Jan. 13.
