Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Jan. 11 at the home of Mary Machay.Topics discussed included a thank you card received from a grateful member of the military who was a recipient of holiday cookies sent by the chapter and upcoming events. A pancake breakfast is scheduled for March 10 at Applebee's in Hazleton. Members were reminded to be at the restaurant by 7:30 a.m. that day.Hostess Machay presented a program about the University of Texas MD Anderson Children's Art Program. Young cancer patients at the center design and make jewelry, greeting cards and note cards, which are then sold online and through catalogs. Proceeds from the sales fund programs designed to enhance the lives of other patients, during and post treatment.The next regular meeting will be held Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m., at the home of Mary Machay.Christmas treesThe Borough of Tamaqua's Street Department will be collecting discarded Christmas trees throughout January.Residents are to place their trees curbside on their regular trash collection days.Trees will be collected as time and weather permit.Trees must be free of all tinsel and decorations. Residents are also asked to remove any plastic bags from the trees.Trees may also be dropped off behind the Tamaqua Borough Garage, at 421 rear E. Broad St.No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.WP softballRegistration for West Penn Girls Softball will be held Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, 9 a.m. to noon, at the West Penn Township Municipal Building. The league is open to girls between the ages of 4 and 14.First time players must provide their birth certificates.For more information, call Scot at (570) 386-2818.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Seniors met Jan. 19 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 82 members in attendance.Vice president Nancy Gerber conducted the business session and provided her weekly report. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Do You Wonder." Secretary Joan Anne Garber offered her report and an inspirational reading. Jayne Myers, Eleanor Roberts and George Fisher were added to the sick list.January and February birthdays will be celebrated at the Jan. 26 meeting.The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the annual congregational meeting will be held following the worship service; Confirmation class will meet at 11:30 a.m.; Sunday school game night will begin at 4 p.m.; Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., cherub choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., junior choir meets at 7 p.m., senior choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.
