Halloween dance proceeds will help children learn to swim

Lehighton Area Pool Pals along with the Lehighton Rotary club are hosting a Halloween dance Oct. 31 at Flagstaff Ballroom. Music for the dance will be provided by Boomerang, a very well known and popular group of local musicians that have been playing together for many years. Along with the band, two comedians will be on hand to entertain the crowd. Headliner Marc Juretus is a well known comedian in the Lehigh Valley area.

Ironically, this will be the first time the band has played at Flagstaff and even more ironic, this will be the band's final performance.Proceeds will go toward the cost of children's swimming lessons next season at the recently refurbished Baer Memorial Community Swimming Pool.Several months ago, the concept of the joint fundraiser was presented to Mark Hoffman, chairman of the Lehighton Area Pool Pals by Barbara Belon, president of the Lehighton Rotary club, asking if there was an opportunity for the two groups to work together on some future fundraiser. The thought was that the two organizations would be enhanced when combined and could also act as a model for other organizations within the community to work together on common goals. The idea of the proceeds going toward swimming lessons was an easy one to agree to, knowing how vital it is for everyone to know how to swim. Both Lehighton Pool Pals and Rotary wanted to make sure that every child will have this opportunity, regardless of their family's financial situation. The recent boat capsizing at Beltzville State Park on Oct. 17 served to reinforce their decision to support swimming lessons for area youth.Costumes are optional. There will be cash prizes awarded to the winning male and female contestant. Two of the judges for this contest will be the mayor of Lehighton Donald Rehrig and the incoming mayor of Palmerton Brad Doll.Pool Pals and Rotary will be serving food at very reasonable prices for those wishing to eat at the event. The menu will consist of turkey and beef barbecue, hot dogs, macaroni salad, tossed salad and brownies, cookies and caramel dipped apples for desert.Tickets can be purchased by calling Mark Hoffman at (610) 377-5275 or contacting any Pool Pal member. There will be a limit of 400 tickets sold and one lucky person will win a door prize that will consist of a family pass for the 2010 swimming season.
