Retired priest dies in Schuylkill crash

A retired priest was killed in a head-on crash on Saturday afternoon in Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the collision occurred about 2:43 p.m. along SR901 at Deep Creek Road, in Barry Township.Troopers said Stephen A. Sheetz, 78, of Mt. Carmel, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer westbound when, for unknown reasons, crossed into the eastbound lane where his vehicle and a fuel oil tanker truck collided head-on.Sheetz was taken to St. Catherine Medical Center, Ashland, where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m. The driver of the fuel truck was identified as Rodney R. Unger, 70, of Leck Kill, Northumberland County. He and passenger, Kenneth J. Fetterolt, 71, of Rebuck, Northumberland County, were taken to St. Catherine where they were treated and released.After impact the fuel truck overturned and came to rest in the eastbound lane on its right side. The Blazer came to rest at the point of impact.The roadway was closed for about six hours, reopening at about 8:40 p.m., troopers said. Another fuel tanker truck was brought to the scene to transfer the fuel in the disabled truck so it could be placed back on its wheels, troopers added.Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Trooper Becker at (570) 593-2000.
