Accident probed in Mahoning Twp.

Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor in an incident which occurred on Oct. 7.

On that date, Summit Hill borough police advised of a hit and run accident in their borough, and gave a description of the vehicle.Officer Jeff Frace of the Mahoning Township Police Department responded to the area of Mill Road and Mahoning Drive West in the township in case the vehicle traveled into the township.A few minutes later, Frace reportedly was advised the vehicle had crashed on Mill Road north of his location.When Frace arrived on the scene, the driver was seated on the guardrail, police said. He allegedly attempted to stand, and nearly fell into the street. Police said there was a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the defendant, he had slurred speech, and he also had blood-shot eyes.The driver was identified as Jeffrey Lynn Hawk, 46, of the 300 block of Hughes Street, New Ringgold.Frace, in his report, said he again attempted to have Hawk stand, and again he lost his balance and nearly fell.Hawk allegely admitted to drinking at least two six-packs of beer.Police said charges are pending the result of the blood alcohol test.
