Gypsy Hill Garden unit evacuated because of fire

Several residents were displaced from their apartment complex after a fire broke out Sunday morning in Lehighton.

Borough fire Chief Pat Mriss said the incident occurred at 9:20 a.m. at a unit inside the Gardens of Gypsy Hill, 401 Mahoning St.

Mriss said a unit was evacuated after a resident reported a fire from a candle left burning overnight.

“It was out on arrival,” Mriss said. “Someone was burning a candle, glass broke and it spread.”

Mriss said they were able to use little fire extinguisher cartridges in the vent hood to extinguish it.

He said no one was injured during the incident.
