Judge denies request for release

A federal judge has denied Shawn Christy’s request to be released from prison as he awaits trial in numerous cases in federal and county courts.

Two of his cases, in Schuylkill and Luzerne county courts, are scheduled to go to trial next week.

Christy, who police and U.S. Marshals pursued in a multistate manhunt in 2018, appeared in federal court on Thursday on a motion to be released from jail, representing himself.

U.S. District Judge Robert D. Mariani denied Christy’s request. In his order he said he considered whether there were any conditions that would assure that Christy would appear for his upcoming court dates, as well as the safety of the community.

In a letter to the court dated Sept. 7, Christy said the court was violating his constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment by holding him a facility for convicted offenders despite not being convicted of any crime. He said Lackawanna County Prison, where he was being held at the time, failed to provide him with medical and dental treatment.

This Monday, Christy is scheduled to go to trial on aggravated assault charges stemming from an incident in March 15, 2017, incident where he allegedly swung a walking stick at the then-mayor of McAdoo in Schuylkill County.

On Tuesday, Christy is also scheduled to go to trial in Luzerne County on burglary and related charges for breaking into a cabin in Butler Township in July 2018.

Christy is also representing himself in the two scheduled trials.

Christy was set to go to trial in the McAdoo assault case shortly before he set off a three-month manhunt, which ranged from upstate New York to Kentucky. He allegedly broke into businesses and homes, and stole multiple vehicles during the manhunt.

U.S. Marshals were on the hunt for Christy starting June 20 of that year, after he was charged with making online threats against elected officials including President Donald J. Trump and Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli. Christy was also accused of posting that he would use “full lethal force” against law enforcement.

Christy was arrested Sept. 21, 2018, in Mansfield Ohio.

He has been charged in numerous cases in county and federal courts.

In federal court, he faces a long list of charges stemming from the three-month manhunt and alleged threats against President Trump.
