The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met at the home of Donna Gerber. She presented a program on the history of Cracker Barrel Restaurants, sharing some of the chain's most famous dishes, menus, maps and book marks. Each member present also took home several Halloween decorations.The chapter also held a pizza and wings Halloween social at the home of Mary Machay. The Costas York Candy Company will be making a donation to the Tamaqua Area Adult Day Center Center in the name of the chapter. The donation follows a recent chapter fundraising effort.Gerber will receive the Order of the Rose, marking her 15 years as a sorority member, on Nov. 20 at Chantilly's Restaurant.The next chapter meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, at Two Kings Restaurant in Hometown. Members will be collecting homemade cookies to be sent to U.S. military troops in the Middle East.TASD comprehensive planThe Tamaqua Area School District's state mandated Comprehensive Plan will be voted on at the next regular meeting of the Tamaqua Area School Board. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, in the Tamaqua Area Middle School.The plan will then be sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for review and approval.Anyone wishing to view the plan may visit the district's website at

www.tamaqua.k12.ps.us or stop in at the district office, 138 W. Broad St.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Oct. 31 with 73 members in attendance. The meeting included a Halloween party, complete with some members attired in costume, food and treats. Costume winners were Nora Sheidy, Jacque Patrick and Joan Deitrick.President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "A Novice Witch." Jane Leninger was welcomed back and Andrew Leibenguth was named an honorary member.Installation of officers for 2014 will be held Nov. 14 and the annual Christmas party will be held on Dec. 12.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Calvary EvangelicalThe Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the patriotic musical "I Love This Land" will be presented at 6:30 p.m. at the church, located at 824 Catawissa Rd. The public is welcome to attend.An hour of prayer and praise is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.A hymn sing will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 17.The annual Thanksgiving and Harvest Home service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24 with music, skits, old fashioned attire, fun and fellowship. National Bible Week will also be celebrated. The public is welcome to attend.
