Panther Valley teacher raises funds to buy books for kids

In the book “Miss Malarkey Leaves No Readers Behind,” a teacher is determined to find each of her students a book that they will enjoy reading.

Panther Valley third-grade teacher Tori Koerbler read the book to her class this year, and it inspired her to take on a similar challenge.

Koerbler found sponsors to raise money so every student in third grade at Panther Valley could receive a book each month of the school year.

“Reading is something I hold near and dear to my heart! I have always looked at books as a way to escape where we are and get taken away on an adventure like no other,” Koerbler said.

Each month, Koerbler distributes book orders from Scholastic Book Club. She noticed that only two or three students would actually return the orders and buy books.

That told her that kids weren’t getting access to books.

Koerbler saw that the book orders include $1 books each month. So she decided to ask friends and parents to sponsor a student for the entire school year. For $9, a sponsor could help provide a student with one book per month, all year long.

Not only did she receive enough donations to provide enough for her own class, she was able to get enough sponsors to expand the program to all of the school’s third-grade classes — 111 students.

Koerbler recently handed out the first book of the year: “Charlotte’s Web.”

Each book had a label which says that the book was purchased by someone who loves reading, and wants them to love it as well.

Koerbler said students were clapping, smiling and even hugging when they received their books.

“A few girls even stated they were going to start a book club at recess to talk about their book,” she said.

Panther Valley Elementary School Principal Robert Palazzo said he’s seen many students diving into “Charlotte’s Web” during their independent reading time during school.

Palazzo said he was thankful for the sponsors who rallied behind the cause, and for Koerbler — who he said is an outstanding educator who believes anything is possible — for taking on the project.

“We are so grateful to everyone that donated to the cause and hope they understand what a difference they made in these students’ lives,” he said.
