Bears offer solid performances at EPC cross country championships

BETHLEHEM — The Pleasant Valley Bears cross country teams gave a solid showing Tuesday at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Cross Country Championships at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course.

“I was pleased overall with our performance,” said PV head coach George Fair of his team’s jaunt around the nine-hole golf course. “We ran a good race and were able to carry out our strategy.”

Evan Fisher-Perez paced the boys squad with a time of 18:40.1, about 15 seconds ahead of teammate Nathan Borger at 18:55.2. Both did a good job at figuring out where everyone was on the course and not rushing it to the end.

“They both ran smart races today and really competed,” said Fair.

Juliana Lopez was the first Pleasant Valley girl to cross with a mark of 21:57.2, ahead of teammate Grace Mingora at 23:25.6. Both runners were able to stay near the pack and run a competitive race.

“I just have a bunch of great student-athletes and they represent the school well,” said Fair in assessing his young team’s progression throughout the season. “They have done real well for me.”

The boys team title went to Parkland, who took first with 39 points. Easton came in second. The Bears collectively finished 11th. The top boys finisher was Joseph Ozgar from Easton, who logged a 16:36.2 mark, just barely beating out Parkland’s Riley Williamson (16:37.2) in a marvelous finish.

Easton claimed the girls’ title with 78 points, while Parkland earned the second spot. Pleasant Valley finished 12th overall. Finishing first among the girls was Laurie Charboneau of Freedom, with a sterling time of 19:36.2. Madison Zaun of Parkland was eight seconds behind her at 19:44.9.

The District 11 Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Oct. 24.
