The Penn-Kidder Library Center, located at the crossroads of Penn Forest and Kidder townships, in just five years has become a true community resource for the residents of both municipalities.
However, its board of directors has now decided to become a branch of Jim Thorpe’s Dimmick library and eventually move the library from its convenient Pine Point Plaza location to a far less convenient proposed new building on the Penn-Kidder school property.
Financial records provided by the library board and testimony before the Kidder Township board of supervisors revealed that the library has lost about $4,400 per year for the past three years, and that becoming a Dimmick Library branch will add between $7,500 and $10,000 per year to the library’s cost of operation. Since the library has only $18,000 in the bank at Dec. 31, 2017, it is evident that they will exhaust those funds by the end of next year and will face bankruptcy.
One has to wonder why the library board would even consider such a disastrous business move.
