May 29, 1993 — Three Times News area athletes medal at the PIAA State Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg. Northern Lehigh’s Bob Chandler captures a gold in the 3200, running a 9:22.34 to win by over 11 seconds. Lehighton’s Carl Wolter earns a third-place finish in the javelin, turning in a throw of 206-5, while Panther Valley’s Brad Miller also claims third, running the 110-hurdles finals in a time of 14.58. Northwestern’s Megan Shaughnessy just misses a medal, taking seventh in the 1600, while Kathy Stiely of Marian places eighth in the 400. (Note: Until 1997, medals were only awarded to top six in each event).
