Relay for life
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Tamaqua and surrounding communities will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Tamaqua Area School District's Sports Stadium. Activities will begin at 2 p.m. Friday.The 24-hour event will include a Survivor Ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m. Friday and a butterfly Release at 1 p.m. Saturday.For more information, to form a team, register as a survivor, become a sponsor or purchase a luminaria bag or a butterfly, contact the Regional Hub Office at 570-874-1413.Honor rollThe name of Alexis Bowman was omitted from the Tamaqua Elementary School Honor Roll, published in Wednesday's edition. Alexis is a third-grade student.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met June 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville. There were 44 members in attendance.President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session and chaplain Kathleen Valentine provided the invocation, "Only What I Need."Guest speaker Joan Breslin offered information on the Schuylkill Transportation System's mass transit buses. Fees will increase by a nickel as of July 1.Phil Price was added to the sick list. New member Ruth Betz was welcomed to the group. Faye Sweeney and Rosetta Folk were welcomed back after absences.Birthday greetings were extended to Cindy Godanis, Faye Sweeney, Elaine Truskey and Thelma Caravello. Shirley Becker and Ruthann Feane offered inspirational readings.The annual picnic will be held at noon July 29 at St. Peter's Grove in Locust Valley.The group meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday.Summer concertsThe Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its free Summer Concert Series on June 25 with a concert by the Christopher Dean Band (rhythm and blues).Other scheduled concerts include: July 9, it takes Two (oldies); July 23, BC Combo (blues); Aug. 6, Fraser Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop); Aug. 20, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Myers (acoustic blues); Sept. 3, Diaspora (classic rock).The concerts are held from 6 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.Sponsorships are still available.For more information, contact the chamber at 570-668-1880, email
