Carbon County court - DUI
Eight people who previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and related charges were sentenced on Monday in Carbon County court by Judge Steven R. Serfass.
Those sentenced included:Christopher Andrew Strauss, 27, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 50 hours of community service.He also pleaded to a count of furnishing a drug-free urine and was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the DUI charge.Strauss was arrested on the DUI count on March 16, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along Ninth Street in Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.The second count stems from an incident on Jan. 23, 2015, when he appeared at the adult probation office for a urine screen and attempted to submit a false test sample.He was given credit for time spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and immediately paroled.Cathryn J. Porambo,65, of Jim Thorpe, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render 25 hours of community service and submit to weekly urine screens. On a summary motor vehicle code violation she was fined $25 and costs.She was arrested on June 11, 2014, by Jim Thorpe police. She was found guilty of the charges by Serfass at a bench trial on April 12.Samantha Lynn Wilson, 25, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 90 days to six months in prison, pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and render 100 hours of community service.On a charge of driving under suspension - DUI related, she was sentenced to serve 45 to 90 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.She is currently an inmate in the county prison serving a probation violation term of eight months that began on May 18. The new sentences run concurrent with the violation term.Laura K. Andrews, 34, of Allentown, was sentenced to serve 90 days to 60 months in prison, a fine of $2,500, license suspended for 18 months and render 100 hours of community service.She was arrested on Feb. 22, 2014, by state police at Lehighton.She was given credit for 83 days already spent in prison on the charge. It was also noted she has two more pending criminal cases.Sean Roy Trujillo, 48, of Allentown, was sentenced to serve 30 days to six months in jail, a fine of $750, license suspension of a year and render a total of 125 hours of community service. On a charge of recklessly endangering another person he was sentenced to serve one to one day less 24 months in prison, concurrent.He was given credit for 32 days spent in an inpatient rehab program and paroled.He was arrested on Aug. 24, 2016, when Franklin Township police responded to a reported hit-and-run crash along Route 2012. Police said Trujillo and his wife were involved in a dispute at a residence. She left the residence in her vehicle with the defendant following. He admitted being under the influence of alcohol at the time and attempting to force his wife off the road. Trujillo's vehicle left the road and crashed.Ronald Getter, 22, of Walnutport, was sentenced to serve 90 days to 60 months in prison, a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and render 100 hours of community service. On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the DUI charge.He applied for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest - but the probation office determined he was not a good candidate for the program. Serfass accepted the recommendation of the probation office and denied his IPP request.He will begin the jail term at 3 p.m. on July 31.Joe Matthew Neff, 30, of New Tripoli, was sentenced to serve a time-served, 173 days, in prison followed by 54 months and 12 days in the IPP with the first six months and 12 days on electronic monitoring. He must also pay a fine of $2,500, license suspended for 18 months and render a total of 100 hours of community service. On a summary offense he was fined $25 and costs. The time-served was credit for time spent in an inpatient rehab program run by the Salvation Army.He was arrested on Sept. 2, 2015, along Mauch Chunk Street by Mahoning Township police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He was also facing a DUI charge for a Sept. 26, 2015, incident along Canal Street filed by state police at Lehighton. That charge was dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office and he pleaded to a summary motor vehicle code violation of no taillights.Gregory Samuel Nyce, 28, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on May 13, 2016, along Fawn Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test revealed a 0.10 BAC.He will begin the jail term on Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. and serve two days and Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. and serve three days.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee and follow any recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
