District forest personnel for the Weiser State Forest will provide the public with the opportunity to drive through the Weiser State Forest, Roaring Creek Tract, Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at the Route 54 parking area.

Traffic will be restricted to Roaring Creek Trail in a one-way direction along the 8-mile trail and exit at the Route 42 gate. All vehicles will be required to exit the State Forest by 3 p.m., and only passenger vehicles cars, pick-up trucks, SUVs and passenger vans will be permitted to enter the tract.Vehicles towing trailers/campers, buses, motor homes and other large vehicles will not be permitted to enter. Canoes, kayaks and other paddle-propelled watercraft can be carried on the roofs of vehicles or in the bed of pick-up trucks for use on the McWilliams Reservoir.Individuals who possess a valid fishing license may fish from the shore or use a watercraft on the reservoir. A valid launch permit from the DCNR or Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is required and must be affixed to the boat.Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and stop along the way at one of several picnic tables located along the trail or at C. Q. McWilliams Picnic Area. Bureau personnel will be posted along the trail and points of interest to assist the public and answer questions.**********Hawk Mountain Sanctuary reports that now is the time to take in the best views of the mountain and the migration at its world famous mountaintop sanctuary. Peak autumn color should hold through early November, offering visitors to the sanctuary one of the most spectacular overlooks in east central Pennsylvania.As the days shorten and temperatures begin to drop, Hawk Mountain biologists say this also is when visitors can spot the greatest variety of migrants on their southbound journey. And, the mix of soaring hawks, eagles and falcons will be set against the yellow and orange, oak-maple forest."Sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks continue to be our most numerous migrant," senior monitoring biologist Dr. Laurie Goodrich said. "Red-tailed and red-shouldered hawk numbers will increase along with golden eagles."Other migrants typically spotted at this time of year are Canada geese, common crow, common loon, American robin, eastern bluebird, American goldfinch, yellow-rumped warbler and both kinglets, early November also is the best time to see both a golden and a bald eagle on the same day.To date, Hawk Mountain biologists have tallied 20,543 raptor migrants, including 13,322 broad-winged hawks, 4,129 sharp-shinned hawks, 510 Cooper's hawks, 463 osprey and 252 bald eagles. To participate, hunters must be properly licensed and be eligible to take an antlerless deer in Wildlife Management Unit 5B on the day they would be hunting.Hunting will be by special permit only, and 100 permits will be issued by random drawing for each hunting day.Hunters wishing to participate in the drawing should apply on a standard postcard that contains their name, mailing address, general license back tag number; muzzleloader and/or archery stamp number and antlerless deer license number for Wildlife Management Unit 5B (if applicable).
