A Coaldale man was charged by Tamaqua police after he stole a vehicle from in front of an ATM on East Broad Street on Aug. 24.
The victim parked his car in front of the Santander Bank preparing to use the ATM. He left his 1999 Ford Explorer running, planning to spend just a few minutes at the machine. As he was entering his code, he heard tires squealing and turned to see his SUV being driven away, headed east on Broad Street, in the direction of Coaldale.He provided police with a description of the vehicle and admitted his wallet and cellphone were left in the vehicle.Other departments were alerted with the vehicle being found in Jim Thorpe at 5:15 p.m., approximately two hours after it was stolen. Jim Thorpe police identified the driver as Roberto Mehmeti, 37, of Coaldale. A review of surveillance footage from the area of the theft identified Mehmeti as the man who stole the Explorer.When the officer approached, Mehmeti ran from the scene.After a chase through the Carbon County parking lot, Mehmeti was taken into custody.Also assisting were Mahoning Township, Franklin Township, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill police departments, as well as the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.Mehmeti had two active warrants, and is currently incarcerated in Carbon County Correctional Facility for those incidents.Tamaqua police charged Mehmeti with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, theft from a motor vehicle and driving with a DUI related suspended license.Jim Thorpe police lodged him in the Carbon County Prison in Nesquehoning, due to outstanding warrants for his arrest issued by Carbon County authorities.
