Local Roundup: Results from April 25-27

Northwestern edged Lehighton behind the pitching of Aidan Freeman on Sunday.

In track and field action Saturday, the Palmerton girls placed first at the Zephyr Invite, while the boys ended second.

Lehighton-N’western

Aidan Freeman turned in an outstanding pitching performance to lead Northwestern to a 2-1 Colonial League victory over Lehighton in a game played Sunday at DeSales University.

Freeman pitched a three-hitter, walking just one while striking out 10.

The Tiger hurler gave up an unearned run in the first inning when Cody Snyder reached on an error, stole second and scored on a hit by Derek Behler.

The score remained 1-0 until Northwestern plated a pair of runs in the home fourth. Nolan Fitzgerald (2-for-3) started the rally with a bunt single, while Mason George followed with another bunt and reached on an error. After Shane Hulmes walked, Brady Zimmerman singled to center to plate both runs.

Indian hurler Aidan Albert allowed just six hits and three walks while fanning three in his six innings of work.

Zephyr Invite

The Palmerton girls took first place in the team standings at the Zephyr Invite on Saturday, while the Blue Bomber boys finished second.

The Lehighton girls also had a solid showing, placing fourth among the 19 teams. There were 18 teams that participated in the boys competition.

Ruby Walters and Nataly Walters both recorded a pair of firsts for the Palmerton girls. Walters captured both the 100 hurdles (16.07) and 300 hurdles (48.25), while Walters took the long jump (18-7 1/2) and triple jump (38-11 1/2). Walters also placed second in the 100 (12.45).

The Bomber boys received an outstanding performance from Jake Rutkowitz, who registered three firsts and a second. The Palmerton sophomore crossed first in the 110 hurdles (15.49) and also bettered the field in the long jump (21-7 1/2) and triple jump (43-1) while ending runner-up in the pole vault (12-0).

Palmerton also received firsts from both Logan Anthony (shot put, 51-1) and Ryan Burkett (discus, 175-8). Trent Ader added a second in the high jump (6-1).

Lehighton’s Joe Roth won the javelin with a throw of 166-4, while Brielle Frable (1600) and Lorah Thomas (shot put) earned seconds during the girls competition.

Cavalier Invitational

Pleasant Valley gained four firsts at the Cavalier Invitational on Saturday.

Danielle Boland won the girls 1600 in a time of 5:37.14, while Demetrius Outten took the boys 300 hurdles in 41.19.

The PV boys also captured a pair of relays — the 400 (43.17) and 1600 (3:30.95).

Runner-up finishes for the Bears included James Morton (1600), Jareal Moore (400), Marty Green (3200) and the girls 3200 relay.

Blue Mtn. Invitational

Four individuals and one relay team captured first-place honors at the Blue Mountain Invitational on Friday.

Northern Lehigh’s Katelynn Barthold won the 800 in a time of 2:19.59 and also helped the Bulldog 3200 relay team take gold in 10:06.68.

Tamaqua’s Samantha Plasha bettered the field in the pole vault, clearing 10-0, and added a second place in the long jump, while fellow Blue Raider Anthony Marchetti crossed first in the 3200 in a time of 10:33.66.

Gavin Nelson of Northwestern accounted for the other first, winning the high jump by clearing 6-7.

Local athletes that turned in second-place finishes included Northwestern’s Rosalia Nestor (1600 and 3200), Sophia Schaffer (400) and the girls 1600 relay team, Marian’s Kali Grochowski (high jump) and Jim Thorpe’s Gavin Strohl (discus).
