Panthers’ break out bats against JT

In their past four games combined, the Panther Valley and Jim Thorpe softball teams had scored a total of just 10 runs.

On Friday, the two squads exploded for 37 runs, with Panther Valley pulling away for a 24-13 victory.

The Olympians grabbed a 5-0 lead in the home half of the first inning, turning over the lineup while doing it. After a walk to Hannah Zacharias, a single by Mara Levins, a sacrifice bunt, and an error that plated the first two runs, Julianna Frantz smacked a ground-rule double to left for an RBI. Kaylyn Costello followed with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Down by five, Panther Valley returned the favor by batting around and scoring six runs. Brooklyn Mika started the rally with a single to right. An error, four walks, and hits by Morgan O’Brien and Kyla McQuillen lifted the Panthers to a 6-5 lead.

Jim Thorpe tied the score in the third inning on singles by Frantz, Costello, and Zacharias, but Panther Valley answered with five more runs in the fourth to build an 11-6 advantage.

“We keep beating ourselves,” Jim Thorpe coach Kathy Levins said. “We’re giving 110 percent every game, but we can’t put all three phases together — pitching, hitting and fielding.”

Levins’ Olympians would score seven more runs, but they couldn’t slow down the Panthers, who crossed the plate 13 more times.

The Black and Gold barrage included their first home runs of the season, coming from Isabella D’Ancona and Morgan O’Brien.

“We’ve been working on being more aggressive with our swings since we had been having trouble scoring runs,” Panther Valley coach Tara Yuricheck said. “Today our bats came alive. I liked that we took some deeper counts, too. We’ve been lacking confidence, and even though we still have to clean up our errors on defense, this was a gutsy performance. We definitely showed some growth because we were able to flush out our mistakes and finish the win.”

Along with their nine hits, the Panthers drew 13 walks and stole six bases. Multiple-hit games came from McQuillen, Caroline Breslin, and O’Brien, who led the clutch hitting attack with five RBIs.

For Jim Thorpe, Zacharias finished 3-for-3, while Levins also collected three hits.

SENIOR DAY .. Jim Thorpe honored its four seniors before the game: Mara Levins, Kaylyn Costello, Isabella Lloyd, and Madison Lordi.

THE STREAKS ... The Olympians dropped their eighth straight game. Panther Valley, meanwhile, continued its back-and-forth streak, alternating losses and wins over its last five games.

OUT-HIT BUT NOT OUTSCORED ... Despite being outhit 16-10, Panther Valley still managed to outscore Jim Thorpe by 11 runs.
