Letter to the editor: Support of candidates for Lehighton School Board

I am writing in support of five candidates running for Lehighton Area School Board positions, Joy Beers, current board president, Darin Dotter, Duane Dellecker, recently appointed to a vacant position, Denise (Getz) Hartley and Kirk Henritzy. Since 2017 I have attended most board meetings and have seen a definite change over the last 3 years. Positive accomplishments are — more opportunities for community members to voice opinions and ask questions. Committees, including community members, were formed to address key district matters. Administrative staff now attend meetings to provide updates on their schools and current initiatives, and board members’ questions are addressed. Two high school students regularly report on school activities and elementary students now lead the Pledge of Allegiance at each meeting — a welcome addition.

Over the past two years, the Assistant to the Superintendent led efforts to update the curriculum. The last update was 2008. Teachers played a key role in selecting new coursework and materials. At a recent meeting Superintendent Moser stated test scores are improving but more work is to be done. Staffing shortages have been addressed with new hires.

The building and grounds department developed a maintenance checklist to help prevent major repairs and there have been NO discussions about constructing new buildings or additions. The building and renovation projects of the last decade resulted in $100 million of debt which will not be paid off until 2044. Thanks to the current board’s collaboration with the administration, there have been no tax increases in the last 3 years. There has been discussion of a tax decrease for this year. Raises for teachers, support staff, part time staff and crossing guards were approved. New policies have been added and old policies have been updated regarding safety of the students and staff. It is essential we continue to move in this direction. Under the direction of these candidates and our new superintendent I feel we can keep improving. Municipal elections are as important as national elections as we select leaders at the local level. Please vote for Beers, Dotter, Dellecker, Hartley and Henritzy on May 20.
