The Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will hold the inaugural Pennsylvania Appalachian Trail Hiker Kickoff Event from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. May 3 at the Hawk Mountain Education Building.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor to the Appalachian Trail or gearing up for a section or thru-hike, the free event will offer invaluable information and resources to help you navigate the AT with confidence.
The event will provide a thorough introduction to the trail in Pennsylvania, featuring maps, water source details, blaze markers and more.
Activities include AT hiker registration, distribution of hang tags, Leave No Trace training, and a pack shakedown station where experienced hikers can help refine your gear.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with trail organizations such as BMECC and other local hiking clubs, enjoy a bake sale and soda station, and participate in specialized panels tailored to both section hikers and thru-hikers.
Additional resources will cover important topics like Hike for Mental Health and day planning strategies to maximize the hiking experience.
“This is a great opportunity to prepare hikers of all levels for their Appalachian Trail journey,” said David Bailey, club president. “Our club has helped create and maintain the AT in Pennsylvania for over 90 years, and we’re proud to ensure hikers — whether new or experienced — are ready for their adventures.”
