SH council details plans for amusement tax

Summit Hill Borough Council this week explained what a proposed amusement tax in the borough would encompass.

Earlier this month, the council said it was anticipating adopting such an ordinance later this year.

Mayor Jeff Szczena asked the council to clarify the ordinance.

The council said it would apply to the machines often seen in gas stations and bars.

“The tax would be paid by the owners of the machines,” said council member Alan Kruslicky.

There has been no formal action taken on the proposal.

In other matters:

• The council agreed to purchase a Ford F-550 truck, equipped with a plow and spreader, from New Holland Ford at a bid price of $124,700. One other quote was received, which totaled $127,500. The truck is for the borough workforce and will replace a vehicle that’s 21 years old and in need of repairs.

Kira Steber, borough’s secretary/treasurer, said the borough is looking at grants and loans to help pay for the vehicle, which won’t be available for about eight months.

Regarding the vehicle being replaced, Steber said, “Our truck isn’t going to last much longer.”

• An electric recycling event will be held for borough residents on Saturday, April 12, from 7-11 a.m. at the Ginder Field. Residential ID is required. Acceptable electronics include TVs (no more than four), computer monitors, computer towers, keyboards, computer mouses, printers, copiers, scanners, laptops and tablets.

• Dates for spring cleanup were also listed. On Saturday, April 19, the cleanup will occur on the east side of town along with Knepper’s Trailer Court and East and West White Bear Drive. On Saturday, April 26, the cleanup will be on the west side of town along with Laurel Drive and East and West Mountaintop Road.

Items to be picked up included tires (no more than four), tire rims, auto body parts, refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, dehumidifiers, water coolers, heat pumps, washers, dryers and stoves. All chemicals, including freon, must be removed. Doors must be taken off appliances.

All tires must have tags attached, which are available at the borough hall during regular business hours.

Up to 10 bags of garbage also will be collected.

• The council will look into purchasing new tables for the Hilltop Community Center.

Council member Marlene Basiago said the present tables are “old, cracked and broken.” She suggested that several new ones be purchased each year to replace the current tables. Steber said the tables at the center now are 13 years old and agreed, “We do need to start replacing them.”

Steber will get prices on tables. No decision was made on if any will be purchased.

• Basiago said the annual Easter egg hunt in Ludlow Park is scheduled for April 12, with the rain date of April 19. It is sponsored by the Summit Hill Recreation Commission.

She said a pysanky egg class held by the commission recently had 14 people in attendance.

• Tentative approval was given to Brian Dolena for a summer basketball league at either the Ginder courts or the Little League field courts. The games would be held on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Sundays from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Rain dates would occur on Tuesdays.

Dolena proposed that liability waivers be used, but the council wants to consult with its solicitor before granting final approval.
