A 30-year-old Beaver Meadows man died after he was struck by a vehicle at 4:52 p.m. Tuesday on Spring Mountain Road in Banks Township while riding a bicycle.
State police at the Hazleton barracks said the man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Carbon County deputy coroner. His identity has not yet been released.
They said the accident happened on about three-tenths of a mile east of Route 93. They said a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Carol E. Furmanchin, 87, of Weatherly, was westbound and approaching Route 93, while two bicycles were traveling westbound in the roadway ahead of the car, riding in tandem.
Police said the Cruze struck both bicycles with its right side bumper. The rider was thrown onto the hood of the car. Police said he traveled up onto the windshield and was then thrown about 100 feet from the point of impact onto the right shoulder of the roadway.
They said the other cyclist, Mayi Abreau Olga, 39, of Beaver Meadows, was thrown off the bicycle and came to rest off the right side of the road.
She was transported by personnel from the McAdoo Fire Company Ambulance Association to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton. Police said the severity of her injuries is unknown but the injuries are believed to not be life-threatening.
Police said the car driven by Furmanchin, who was uninjured, came to rest in a parking lot at the intersection with Route 93.
