Mrs. Bertha M. Herman, caretaker at the Asa Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe for the past 25 years, has announced plans to retire.

The Jim Thorpe Borough Council accepted her letter of resignation last night. It becomes effective on March 31.

Her decision was attributed to impaired health and the recent death of her husband, Thomas Herman, who worked with her in maintaining the famous Victorian era mansion overlooking Packer Hill. The Hermans have occupied the original caretakers’ home located at a level above the mansion.

The borough owns the mansion, according to a bequest in the last will and testament of Mary Packer Cummings, last surviving member of the famous family.
