N. Lehigh adds girls wrestling

Northern Lehigh School Board has joined the fray and approved girls wrestling as a sport in the school district.

Other schools in the area have added girls wrestling, and the district is the latest following an 8-0 vote at Monday’s school board meeting.

The high school varsity girls wrestling program, which is effective during the 2025-2026 school year, is estimated not to exceed $22,000, and will include one coaching position, supplies, transportation, officials and gameworkers.

Also added on Monday were both boys’ and girls’ soccer programs at the junior high level, each at estimated costs not to exceed $8,000, also effective during the 2025-2026 school year.

The costs for both soccer programs will include one coaching position, supplies, transportation, officials and gameworkers for each.

Director Donna Kulp said she’s glad to see the additional programs being made available for the students in the district.

“I think it’s great that Northern Lehigh is offering extracurricular activities for the junior high programs and the high school varsity wrestling program, which is really nice,” Kulp said. “I’m not sure how many other districts have that, but I like the fact that we are giving our students more opportunities to participate in things.”

Board President Mathias Green pointed out that the interest was there, specifically noting the number who have signed up for the varsity girls high school wrestling team.

“It’s my understanding that we have more and more and more students signing up to participate in various extracurricular activities,” Green said. “It appears that you may have enough to kind of fill every spot on the team.”

Athletic director Bryan Geist said they have 13 girls that are signed up, and added the district had four girls that went and wrestled against boys during the regular season “that showed the grit and determination and wrestled in districts against other girls that paved the way for an entire team.”

“I’d like to thank the board for their support in providing a girls wrestling program,” Geist said.

Director Chad Christman was absent.
