Community foundation adds Drury history scholarship

The Carbon County Community Foundation announces the John Drury Future Historians Scholarship Fund, established by local historian and community advocate, John Drury of Jim Thorpe.

This new scholarship aims to inspire and support the next generation of historians who share Drury’s passion for preserving local history.

The fund will award two $2,500 scholarships to students residing in the Jim Thorpe School District, including those who are home-schooled or attending schools outside the district as long as they reside within the Jim Thorpe area.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in local history and plan to major in history or a related field in college.

Applications are now open, and the deadline to apply is March 15.

John Drury has dedicated much of his life to preserving and celebrating the rich history of the Jim Thorpe area. As a prominent community figure and the founder of the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center.

Drury has played an instrumental role in educating locals and visitors alike about the area’s vibrant past. His commitment to historical preservation and education has inspired the creation of this scholarship fund to support students who wish to follow in his footsteps.

“As most people would agree, I believe that relating stories to the beginnings of our town is valuable in having future generations understand what happened. We honor Josiah White, founder of the town, by preserving and interpreting the remaining evidence of his creations and passing along his stories to present and future generations. Having young people involved is a key factor in this effort,” Drury said.

The Carbon County Community Foundation is proud to partner with John Drury to launch this new fund.

“This scholarship not only honors John’s passion for the area but also invests in the future leaders who will continue to preserve and share our community’s history,” said Sharon Alexander, president of the Carbon County Community Foundation.

In addition to the John Drury Future Historians Scholarship, the Carbon County Community Foundation hosts more than a dozen other scholarship funds, with awards for area students ranging from $50 to $8,000. The deadline to apply for all other scholarships is Saturday.
