Three Carbon row offices on ballot

Three Carbon County row offices will be on the municipal election ballots this year.

The four-year terms of office for the clerk of courts, treasurer and register of wills/clerk of the orphans’ court are to be filled by the electorate this time around.

The current clerk of courts is Tyra Boni of Franklin Township; the treasurer is Kevin Zelienka of Palmerton; and the register of wills/clerk of orphans’ court is Jean Papay of Palmerton. To date, none have publicly announced whether or not they are seeking re-election.

The clerk of courts and treasurer’s positions will pay $71,111 in 2026, $72,533 in 2027, $74,709 in 2028 and $76,950 in 2029, according to a salary structure adopted by the Carbon County Board of Commissioners.

The register of wills/clerk of the orphans’ court post, being a dual position, will pay $72,993 next year, $74,493 in 2027, $76,788 in 2028 and $79,152 in 2029. Plus, in each of those years, the officeholder will receive an additional $2,000.

By law, salaries for positions have to be established before a person is elected to the positions, this being the responsibility of the country commissioners. At a special meeting held on Nov. 19 last year, commissioners Michael Sofranko, Wayne Nothstein and Rocky Ahner approved a pay schedule that grants the officeholders raises of 2, 2, 3 and 3 percent, respectively in the next four years.
