Snow, wintry mix, rain all expected on Saturday

Here we go again.

Another winter storm is headed our way on Saturday that’s expected to produce several inches of snow followed by periods of sleet and freezing rain.

“I think a lot of it is going to end up being rain, there could be some sleet and freezing rain,” said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. “It probably doesn’t come in until Saturday afternoon, but it is coming.”

Kines said it could begin as some frozen stuff at the start, with perhaps snow accumulation in the form of several inches, before turning back over to rain probably by Saturday night.

“If you have any errands tomorrow, do them in the morning,” he said.

For a time Saturday night, temperatures are going to be close to freezing, Kines said.

“So there’s concern it could be freezing rain certainly the first half of the night,” he said. “If you’ve got to do some traveling tomorrow evening, it might not be the best of conditions.”

Kines said rain continues into the day on Sunday before it may begin to taper off Sunday afternoon as temperatures climb back up into the 40s to alleviate any danger of ice conditions.

He said that as the storm moves away, winds will pick up out of the west and northwest, which is expected to bring in much colder air beginning Sunday night and into the early part of next week.

On Monday and Tuesday, high temperatures are only expected to be in the 20s, Kines said.

“Definitely windy on Monday; it will probably feel like single digits,” he said. “That’s definitely a bundle-up day.”

So after we clean up that mess, we ought to be in the clear, right?

Not so fast, as Kines cautioned the potential for yet another round snow could occur by midweek.

“It’s just a matter of how far north that storm will get,” he said. “With that cold air in place for Monday and Tuesday, any storm that will affect us will be in the form of snow.”
