Auxiliary meeting

The West End Memorial Legion’s Auxiliary Unit 927 is slated to meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

WE Missions dinner

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, is offering its West End Missions dinner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and again on Feb. 27.

Senior event

Chestnuthill Senior Center, at Zion Lutheran Church, will be hosting a Valentine’s Day event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. There will be a crowning of a king and queen, with entertainment by The Lost Ramblers band and lunch.

Meal reservation by eligible seniors must be made before 10:30 a.m. Thursday by calling 570-420-3745. Be sure to mention the event.

Men’s breakfast

Our Lady Queen of Peace church is holding its Men’s Breakfast after the 8 a.m. service Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Post cleanup

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, is holding its monthly cleanup day from 9 a.m.-noon. Members from the various units meeting there are invited to assist.

Pinewood Derby

The Scouts meeting at Effort UMC are having their Pinewood Derby from 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the church’s Wesley Hall.

Valentine’s Day dance

The Knights of Columbus of Our Lady Queen of Peace are hosting a Valentine’s Day dinner dance at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets must be bought in advance. It is a BYOB event.

Parade planned

On Sunday, a parade is planned by Chestnuthill leaders and residents to celebrate the 100th birthday of Raymond Francis Benensky, a highly decorated World War II veteran.

The American Legion Riders are set to lead the parade, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at the old fire company on Route 115, going by Benensky’s house and ending at the Legion Post home at 1:30 p.m., where a party will take place.

Folks along the parade route are encouraged to line the route with national and military flags as well as happy birthday signs.

Trout stocking

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will begin stocking trout in 691 streams and 130 lakes open to public angling beginning Monday, prepping for the statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day on March 29 and statewide opening day of trout season on April 5.

Prayer shawl work

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry group will meet from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday.

Brodheadsville’s Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet group meets at 1 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

Military Share

The American Legion Post Home 927 will host the Military Share Program on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Sharing the Love

Effort UMC Youth are “sharing the love” on Sunday. They have held a fundraiser for christian education and on Sunday, they will be distributing the hearts and a few chocolates that parishioners “bought” via donations, with a special message to recipient congregants.

The message could be one of “gratitude, thankfulness, love, etc.”

Communion offered

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, will have Holy Communion at its 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.

Grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available.

PTSD support

The VALOR-sponsored PTSD Support Group will hold its monthly meeting from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion Post Home on Route 209.

The meeting is open to anyone.

The Western Pocono Community Library hosts a grief support group as part of St. Luke’s Hospice Bereavement Program. The next gathering is set for 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 19.

Next free dinner

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, is hosting its next community drive-thru free dinner from 5-6 p.m. Feb. 19.

A free hot dinner will be available.

Zion offers worship opportunities Saturdays at 5 p.m.; Sundays at 8 a.m. and also via Zoom, and 10:30 a.m., also via Facebook Live. A simple prerecorded spoken service is available each week on Facebook. Sunday school is at 9:15 a.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

Zion Lutheran also offers parish hall rentals for 2025 gatherings and events; call the church at 570-992-6988.

Soup sale reminder

Effort UMC is holding its monthly soup sale through Feb. 19.

The soups available include seven-bean and ham soup and chicken orzo Florentine.

The pickup date is Feb 23.

Eldred meeting

Eldred Township supervisors are slated to meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Municipal Building at 490 Kunkletown Road.

Meetings are held virtually and in person.

Concert of Prayer

St. Matthew’s Church in Kunkletown Prayer Team is sponsoring an evening service at 7 p.m. Feb. 20, which is to include “fellowship, praise, worship, testimonies and targeted prayer,” in order to come together “to pray for the future” of the church.

Thinking camp?

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers Summer Day Camps for ages 7-10 and 11-13.

Offered this year are “Get in Touch with Nature” for ages 7-10, and “Adventure Camp” day camp for ages 11-13. There are several weeks to choose from. Children can register for one week.

St. Matthew’s Christians in Action is hosting a cash and gift card bingo at the Kunkletown church on March 2, with doors opening at noon.

Sponsor a tree

The Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is once again promoting its “Sponsor-A-Maple Tree” program.

For the cost of sponsoring, each sponsor receives a pint of fresh maple syrup; a handsome certificate; free admission to one of the Public Day Programs on March 1 or 8 for up to four people; and a map showing the location of the sponsored tree in KCEEC Sugarbush.

Free weatherization

The free government-funded weatherization service is available for folks based on income limits, beginning with one person with an income limit of $30,120, whereas for a family of eight the income limit is $105,440.
