Slatington man charged with threatening ex-girlfriend with knife
A Slatington man is scheduled to appear in court after he allegedly put a knife to his ex-girlfriend’s throat.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman William Borst of the borough police department:
At 1:27 a.m. Feb. 17, Borst was dispatched to the 100 block of East Center Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance in progress.
Borst arrived at the residence and immediately heard loud screaming and shouting coming from inside the residence.
He saw a man and woman standing in the kitchen shouting and entered the residence.
Borst separated them and spoke with the victim, who was seated on a couch in the living room.
Borst saw a large kitchen knife lying on the living room floor next to the couch.
The victim said that her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Smith, 37, had arrived at her residence intoxicated, and they began arguing.
She said Smith left the living room, walked to the kitchen and returned, brandishing a kitchen knife.
The victim said Smith left the living room with the knife, and she called 911 on her cellphone and began speaking with a dispatcher. Smith returned to the living room after overhearing her on the phone with 911.
The victim said Smith lifted her off the ground by her throat with both hands around her neck and slammed her onto the living room couch.
She said the two fought over the cellphone before Smith smashed it on the ground.
The victim said Smith held the tip of the knife to her throat and said, “Is this what you want?”
Police arrived a short time later.
Smith faces charges of terroristic threats, simple assault — physical, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment by physical contact.
He was sent to Lehigh County Jail on $25,000 bail, but is free after posting bail.
Smith is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Monday before District Judge Ronald S. Manescu in Lehigh County Central Court.
