B-95 is special for Lehighton woman
She likes bingo, playing cards, and is known to still have a sweet tooth from time to time.
That she still gets to participate in all those activities while surrounded by friends is just the icing on the cake as far as Bessie Bauchspies is concerned.
On Tuesday, Bauchspies celebrated her 95th birthday at the Lehighton Recreation Center.
“Everything is fine,” said Bauchspies, who faithfully attends the rec center every Tuesday to play bingo from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
So, how exactly did Bauchspies commemorate her special day? With a friendly good old fashioned game of bingo.
An avid card player, Bauchspies said she enjoys socializing and taking part in the many activities at the rec center.
“I’m always glad to have something to do,” she said. “It’s better than being alone.”
A former borough councilwoman, Bauchspies resides at the Victorian Manor in Lehighton.
Bauchspies is the widow of Wilbur A. “Cap” Bauchspies, who was the former mayor of Lehighton.
“My husband was the mayor,” she gleefully said. “I was proud of him.”
“Cap” passed away in 2009 at the age of 81 while in office.
The couple was married for 61 years, and together, they had five children: Dennis, of Franklin Township, Kathy Getz, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and John, Kay, and Joel, all of whom are deceased.
They also have four grandchildren, Kelley and Christen Bauchspies, of Lehighton, and Ben and Alex Getz, of Las Vegas, Nevada.
