Planners list issues with Marriott project
Plans for a proposed hotel in Franklin Township are moving forward, but could hit a snag if issues outlined by Carbon County officials aren’t addressed.
On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission recommended conditional plan approval with the condition that if the comments outlined are not adequately mitigated before the preliminary/final plan approval, then the county’s recommendation changes to plan rejection of the project.
“It’s up to Franklin Township on how they handle it,” Ivan O. Meixell Jr., county planner, said.
The plans, which were updated and resubmitted to the commission, include constructing a 17,225-square-foot four-story, 97-room hotel that would become TownePlace Suites by Marriott.
Meixell said that the plans that were submitted to the commission in May 2024 were for three stories.
He pointed out several areas in the plans that must be addressed including:
• Making sure property lines, bearing and distance discrepancies that exist between the recorded map of the property and the plan are fixed.
• An erosion and sediment pollution control plan must be provided and approved by the Carbon County Conservation District.
• An approved Department of Environmental Protection NPDES permit for stormwater discharges is required.
• A drainage/stormwater management plan meeting the requirements of Franklin Township’s ordinances is needed.
• Adequate and reliable water sources need to be outlined and reviewed by Franklin Township and the township fire chief.
Interchange Investment Group LLC of Bethlehem purchased the 9-acre property at 1055 Interchange Road in 2019 for $1.1 million. The property was formerly Jimmy’s Gym.
In 2020, the investor outlined its plans for constructing another hotel along that stretch of road. There are currently two within a one-mile radius of that section that is just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit.
