The bear involved in an attack on a man Sunday in Jim Thorpe has tested positive for rabies, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
The diagnosis explains it abnormal behavior, commission spokesman Travis Lau said.
“Black bears under normal circumstances are not aggressive toward people,” he said.
The bear attacked Andrew Neirer just before noon on Silk Street. As it clawed and bit Neirer, it was shot and killed by neighbor Mike Bramich.
“While rabies in bears is rare, and a case emerging in a given area usually is isolated, rabies poses a risk to all mammals,” Lau said in a statement.
Anyone who observes wildlife acting abnormally should report it to the commission at 833-PGC-WILD.
