Walnutport police help resident through ‘no shave’ event
They may have appeared a bit scruffy, perhaps even a little rough around the edges.
But, for officers of the Walnutport Police Department, their physical appearance was all by design.
That’s because they once again participated in “No Shave November” to help a borough woman, who works at a pizzeria in Walnutport.
Sgt. Jason Nothstein, officer in charge, along with patrol officers Nicholas Hartman and Scott Ledo gathered at the borough police station Monday afternoon.
Their purpose was to present the $1,000 in funds they raised through the campaign to borough resident Marlen Olivares Villeda, who has breast cancer.
Nothstein said it was a “no-doubter” to donate the funds to Olivares Villeda, who works at D’Sopranos in Walnutport.
“This was a personal thing for me,” Nothstein said. “It’s personal because I eat there often and I’ve gotten to know her and her husband, who also works there, very well
Nothstein explained why Olivares Villeda was chosen as the recipient.
“Marlen was chosen because she is a resident of Walnutport, works six days a week, 10-11 hours a day, and continued to work as she was getting treatments done,” he said. “The funds came from our officers, who paid a fee each month in November and December, to have facial hair. We also accepted donations from the community, and this year we had a few, very sizable donations.”
Nothstein then told Olivares Villeda how much the department raised.
Olivares Villeda’s reaction was that of shock and disbelief.
She then thanked the department for its gracious contribution.
