Altar & Rosary

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s Altar & Rosary Society will meet at 6 p.m. today at the church in Brodheadsville.

Legion dates

Two groups will be meeting at the American Legion Post home today in Gilbert. The Building Committee meeting is from 6-7 p.m. and the Scout Troop 102 Committee meeting is from 7-8 p.m.

On Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon, it’s Post Clean-up Day, and from 6-11 p.m., it’s Sip & Paint.

Eldred Township

The Eldred Township Board of Supervisors is slated to meet at 7 tonight at the Municipal Building, 490 Kunkletown Road.

Residents can participate in-person or virtually.

Kunkletown Thrift Store

Located at 516 Kunkletown Road, in the old Eldred Elementary School, the store is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Donations will be accepted Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nothing later, please.

Donors are asked not to make boxes or bags heavy. Clothing donations should not be in big large green garbage bags. Donations should not be brought in the front door. Instead, donors are asked to come inside and tell a volunteer there is a donation, and the volunteer will direct the donor where to take the donations.

If anyone has furniture or something extremely heavy, donors are asked to bring someone along to help.

Not accepted: exercise equipment, electronics, TVs, luggage, small toys, pillows, mattresses, bed frames, car seats, wire hangers, anything in disrepair or soiled, shoes or undergarments.

Blood donors help

From Rep. Jack Rader comes word that January is National Blood Donor Month, so designated on Dec. 31, 1969, by presidential proclamation.

The need for more donors is very high, Rader said.

Thank-you told

Thank-you is expressed by Our Lady Queen of Peace Church to the talented seamstress volunteers who used their talents and created additional, beautiful 3 Kings costumes.

The church also extends thank-yous to the many volunteers for bringing the Kings’ gifts forward at the Epiphany Masses.

Free supper

Zion United Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is hosting its free drive-thru community dinner tonight from 5-6 p.m. The menu is turkey barbecue, stuffing, green bean casserole and dessert.

No reservation required; all are welcome to receive.

Prep time for helpers begins at 2:30 p.m.

Men’s breakfast

On the third Saturday of each month, a Men’s Breakfast is held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church at 8:30 a.m.

Men’s Group meets

Effort United Methodist Church’s Men’s Group will be meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Eldred Twp. office

The Eldred Township office will be closed Monday in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It will reopen at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Senior luncheon

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will host its next senior luncheon on Jan. 20 after the 12:10 Mass.

Needle ministry

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday.

Zion United Lutheran’s group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m.

Both groups welcome new members.

PVI PTO

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate PTO is slated to meet from 4-5 p.m. Thursday.

AA meetings

Zion United Lutheran hosts an Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at 7:30 Thursdays and Mondays.

McMichaels United Methodist Church hosts its AA meeting at noon on Wednesdays and at 6:30 p.m. Saturdays.

There is no charge and all meetings are confidential.

Grief support

Brodheadsville’s Grief Support Group will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Western Pocono Community Library.

Eagle watches set

Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced two Eagle Watch field trips to the upper Delaware River in search of the bald eagle.

The trips are scheduled for Jan. 24 and Feb. 7.

Stromboli orders

Effort UMC is accepting stromboli orders — for broccoli and cheese, pepperoni and cheese, and cheesesteak — through Jan. 31 to benefit the Youth Mission trip in June to Middletown, Ohio.

Pickup will be Sunday, Feb 9.

Movie Night

The PVE and PVI PTO Movie Night is on the calendar for 6:30-8 p.m. in the Pleasant Valley High School auditorium.

Souper Bowl events

Effort UMC will have soup pots in the Narthex for donations of canned goods such as canned fruit, canned pasta, canned vegetables, canned sauces, etc. and non-perishables.

Back by popular demand, the church will also have a little competition involving the teams that will be playing in this year’s Super Bowl. Each soup pot will have a team name so donors can vote for their favorite by placing their donations in that pot.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, will host a Souper Bowl potluck luncheon on Feb. 2 after the worship service.

Attendees are reminded to bring cans of soup to the worship service to be placed on tables in the front of the church. The cans of soup will be donated to the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.

St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ, Kunkletown, will begin receiving cans of soup or cash to place in the pots marked for the teams playing in the Super Bowl. The game table will be located in the Gathering Room.

Planning ahead

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has shared with its parishioners that the church will be collecting Christmas donations for next year’s Christmas fair during the flea market drop-off, as well as another day.

Help needed

The Garden of Giving is seeking volunteers to help in the office for emails, phone calls and mail that need someone to deal with them. A volunteer with experience using QuickBooks would be perfect.

Sponsor a tree

The Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is once again promoting its “Sponsor-A-Maple Tree” program.

Anyone can do so. For the cost of sponsoring, each sponsor receives a pint of fresh maple syrup; a certificate; free admission to one of the Public Day Programs on Saturday, March 1 or 8 for up to four people; and a map showing the location of the sponsored tree in KCEEC Sugarbush.

The fundraising program helps offset costs for the maple sugaring educational program. By participating in the “Sponsor-A- Maple Tree” program, people can help offset costs for students.
