Man in custody after carjacking, firing shots, home invasion

A man who stole a car, fired shots and led police on a two-county chase was taken into custody Monday morning after he crashed in Schuylkill County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said the incident began in Butler Township, Luzerne County, when Butler police officers attempted to stop the driver of a stolen vehicle.

Police said the driver fled the area, got out of the vehicle, fired shots and then ran away. The man then committed a home invasion at a nearby residence and stole a vehicle.

Police said he was located on Interstate 80, where troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued, police said.

The chase traveled into Schuylkill County where the driver crashed after crossing over spike strips. Police said he was taken into custody without incident.

His name has not been released at this time.

Around 10 a.m. Monday, the chase was along Route 54 in the areas of Barnesville and Hometown. A portion of Route 54 was closed at Marian Avenue in Rush Township.

Police said that no shots were fired by any trooper or police officer. According to police, it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

The investigation is continuing.
