Palmerton’s Derek King and Dillon Lombardi both won wrestling tournament titles, while the Northwestern boys and Marian girls each earned basketball wins over the weekend.

BOYS WRESTLING

51st Bill Scott

Memorial Tournament

Palmerton participated in the 51st Bill Scott Memorial Tournament at Lyman High School in Florida.

The Blue Bombers’ Derek King and Dillon Lombardi both captured championships at the event, which featured 31 schools.

King actually faced teammate Dillon Anthony in the 157-pound championship bout. The two went 4-0 to reach the finals, with King posting a pin to earn the title.

Lombardi also registered a fall in the 165-pound final to earn first place. Lombardi recorded a pair of technical falls to reach the semifinals, and then had a pin to advance to the championship match-up.

The Bombers also received fourth-place finishes from Thomas Pasqueriello (106) and Colton Becker (120), while Josh Merkel (132), Aidan Ortiz (138) and Braden Strohl (175) all placed fifth.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Elizabethtown Girls

BAGUBA Brawl

Panther Valley and Palmerton both competed at the Elizabethtown Baguba Brawl over the weekend.

The Panthers’ Brenda Banks had the top finish among area wrestlers, posting a second place at 235. The defending state champion reached the finals with an eight-second pin, a 42-second fall and a 15-1 major decision. In the title match, however, an injury default ended her tournament.

PV also received a fourth-place finish from Anelia Bennick at 155, while Alisa Williams battled back in the consolations after an early loss to earn fifth.

The Bombers’ Skyler Benninger went 3-2 at 130 pounds.

The Panthers placed 13th in the team standings out of 29 teams.

Hanover Area

Holiday Classic

Pleasant Valley was among 25 schools that took part in the Hanover Area Holiday Classic.

The Bears’ Juliette Trout finished second at 124 pounds. Trout gained pins in 19 and 18 seconds in the opening rounds, before posting a 22-10 major decision in the semifinals. The PV athlete, however, was pinned during the championship round.

Pleasant Valley also received sixth-place finishes from both Isabella Altemose (170) and Lily Decker (235).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Palmerton

Northwestern won its fourth straight game by rolling to a 77-47 Colonial League victory over host Palmerton.

Gavin Nelson scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter as the Tigers raced to a 25-7 advantage.

Malachi Coleman hit a three-pointer in each quarter and finished with 15 points for the winners.

The Blue Bombers received 13 points from both Logan Anthony and Corey Serfass, while Cam Pengelly added 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-Central Catholic

Four Marian players scored in double figures as the Fillies pulled away from Central Catholic for a 49-32 non-league victory.

Addy Fritz scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack by Marian, which won its fifth straight game after trailing by a point after the first quarter.

Olivia Serfass and Deanna Pugh both finished with 11 points for the winners, while Addy Marek added 10.

The Vikettes received a team-high 12 points from Shamiya Roberts.
