Frigid temps tonight, Sunday

Frigid cold temperatures are on their way, with lows expected to dip into the single digits today and Sunday.

A few snow showers could still linger Saturday, with a possible burst of heavy snow before sunrise which could make things a bit slippery, according to Alex DaSilva, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.

After sunrise, DaSilva said just a few flurries were expected with a high around 30 degrees.

However, tonight temperatures will really begin to take a turn, with the temperature expected to drop to 12 degrees, he said.

It will be chilly, with the wind blowing and real feel temperatures down to negative 5 degrees, DaSilva said.

“It’s going to be real brutal out there if you’re going to any holiday parties or anything like that,” DaSilva said.

Sunday will continue to be cold, with a high of 23, though he said it won’t be as windy.

The low is expected to be 8 degrees, but DaSilva said real feel temperatures will be around zero.

“The coldest real feel temperatures will be on Saturday night because of the wind,” he said. “The air temperature is a little higher Saturday, but the wind is much more significant.”

Overall, DaSilva said average highs this time of year should be in the low 40s, so we’re about 20 degrees colder than the average high, while average lows should be in the mid-20s, but will be about 10 to 15 degrees below average.

“These temps are well below where we’re supposed to be this time of year,” DaSilva said. “It’s certainly going to be quite cold out there.”

DaSilva said things are expected to come up little bit temperature wise on Monday, with a high of 27.

But, he said we’ll have to keep a close eye on a storm system coming through Monday night across the state that could lead to some wintry precipitation in the area.

DaSilva said that before sunrise Tuesday morning, areas could possibly see a coating to an inch of snow possible, depending on the exact track of the storm.

Any snow should be gone by the midday hours on Christmas Eve, but watch for some slippery spots.

DaSilva said Wednesday, Christmas Day, looks to be dry across the entire state, with highs around 37. “The best chance of more than an inch from Christmas Eve would be up toward the Poconos,” he said. “So, if you’re traveling to be with family, it could be a little bit more slippery up in that area.”
