NW’s Gober named First Team all-state
She doesn’t pile up the statistics.
She creates them.
Northwestern’s Hannah Gober doesn’t get the publicity many of her teammates receive — especially the members of the forward line — but her contributions on the field are arguably the most important.
The junior was recently named to the Pennsylvania Coaches Field Hockey Association First Team all-star squad, earning that distinction for the second year in a row.
Four other Tigers were also named all-state. Cara Thomas and Ella Dangello made the Second Team, while Amelia Birch and Haley Kerschner were Honorable Mention selections.
“She’s a really talented player all-around,” said Northwestern head coach Lissa Opolsky. “For her, the statistics only tell part of the story. She doesn’t have as many goals as some of the other people on our team, but she’s pretty much the driving force behind what we’re able to do and accomplish because she draws a lot of attention from other team’s players.
“She opens up the field in more ways than what she’s able to do with the ball. Because people spend so much time giving her attention, it allows some of the other players on our team to really perform at a higher level. And she has a really great sport IQ.”
Gober, who plays center mid for the Colonial League and District 11 champs, ended the season with 11 goals and 10 assists.
This is actually the third straight season she has made all-state, as she received Honorable Mention status as a freshman.
“She didn’t start playing hockey until later in her sports career,” said Opolsky. “She actually transferred from being a pretty high level soccer player, so with our sports being very similar it was super helpful for her ... She’s definitely the heart beat of the team, a team player for sure.
“Her ball control, her ability to distribute on the field and find her teammates, and make passes to move the ball over our transition from offense to defense (are her top skills). She played center mid for us, so she’s playing on both ends of the ball, touching the ball almost every possession. She is definitely someone who possesses distribution skills.”
Gober has already verbally committed to Ohio State University and will be playing in the Big Ten in the future.
Working alongside Gober was Dangello, who was also a Second Team all-stater a year ago.
“Ella works really well with Hannah in the midfield and on our right side, which is our strong side. It’s very deserving for her. She works really hard.”
Dangello posted four goals and eight assists this past season.
Speaking of goals, Thomas accumulated a ton of them over the years. She pumped in 29 this season and finished her career with a school-record 85.
“Getting (Cara) on the Second Team was great,” said Opolsky. “All-State takes into account a lot of what you do in high school, but also a lot of what you do in club season and some things in other sports as well to determine if you check enough boxes.
“Cara doesn’t have the opportunity to play club stuff just because she’s playing all the sports all the time. So, she was kind of able to check some boxes along the way with just her personal statistics, how well our team did and then obviously some of her other accomplishments in other sports.”
It was apparent that the Tigers’ strong defense was key in gaining a pair of titles this season, as they allowed only nine goals in 18 regular season games. Included in that were 12 shutouts.
Birch (four goals, three assists) and Kerschner (five goals, four assists) were vital to that defensive performance, and were recognized for their efforts.
“We’ll really look a lot to them next year,” said Opolsky. “They’re more defensive types of players where they don’t have the statistics that a Cara, Olivia (Costa) or Carsyn (Van Norman) do on the forward line. We really had to tell their story and how important they were to our team defensively because unless you see them play, you’re not going to know their level based on what’s in a statistics book.”
