Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 14

Lehighton and Marian both received wins in boys and girls basketball over the weekend.

The Indian teams edged Salisbury in Colonial League action, while the Colts defeated Salem Christian and the Fillies downed Executive Education.

Three other area boys teams — Pleasant Valley, Northwestern and Weatherly — also picked up wins, while the Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua girls also were victorious.

In wrestling action, Palmerton’s Dillon Lombardi won an individual title at the Carlisle Classic.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lehighton-Salisbury

Lehighton hung on to post a 46-45 Colonial League victory over host Salisbury.

The Indians, who won their third straight game, held an eight-point halftime lead behind 12 points from Joe Roth.

Roth finished with a game-high 18 points, while teammate John Light contributed 12.

The Falcons were led by Steven Lozada’s 16 points.

Zach Prator scored all 14 of his points in the first half as Pleasant Valley earned a 41-39 non-league victory over Brandywine Heights.

Prator’s effort helped the Bears gain a nine-point halftime advantage. PV shot 7-of-10 from the foul line in the second half to help preserve the lead.

Jaxson Haines chipped in with nine points for the winners, while Scott Ray paced the Bullets with 16 points.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Northwestern took control of the game with a big second quarter, and then used a strong third to key a 61-40 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Gavin Nelson poured in a game-high 22 points for the Tigers, who outscored the Spartans 21-5 in the second and then posted 24 more points in the third.

The winners, who were playing their home opener, also received 14 points from Eli Zimmerman.

Joey Plessl led Solehi with 11 points.

Ian McKeegan poured in a game-high 27 points as Weatherly cruised past MMI Prep in non-league action.

McKeegan tallied nine of his points in the first quarter as the Wreckers raced to a 23-4 lead.

The winners also received 12 points from Niko Saldukas, while the Preppers were paced by Jandel Figueroa’s 15 points.

A balanced scoring attack allowed Marian to post a 65-51 non-league victory over host Salem Christian.

The Colts had six players tally at least eight points, with Dominic Catrone and Rocco Griguoli leading the way with 10 apiece.

Yaniel Nunez and Bryan Ferreira both finished with nine for the winners, who took control with a 21-6 second quarter.

The Eagles received a team-high 15 points from Caleb Marks.

Palisades built a double-digit halftime lead en route to a 58-43 Colonial League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Blake Oglialoro scored all 10 of his points in the opening half as the Pirates led 31-20 at the break.

The winners received a game-high 22 points from Lincoln Cook, while Pierce Gothard paced the Olympians with 11 points and Aaron Curran chipped in with nine.

Millie Black finished with a double-double to lead Tamaqua to a 68-12 non-league victory over Nativity.

Black scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Blue Raiders, who won their fourth straight and held the Golden Girls scoreless in the first half.

Veronica Scott and Samantha Plasha both added 10 points for the winners, while Scott also came up with five steals.

Uyvari scored all of her seven fourth-quarter points from the foul line, while Trotman had eight points in the first half.

Kendra Morgan led Salisbury with a game-high 20 points.

After three straight losses, Jim Thorpe picked up its second straight victory with a 42-35 Colonial League win over Palisades.

Ryah Confer recorded a team-high 11 points for the Olympians, who outscored the Pirates by a 25-8 margin in the middle frames.

The winners also received 10 points from Ciara Lees, while Ella Young tallied a game-high 14 for winless Palisades.

BOYS WRESTLING

Carlisle Classic

Palmerton’s Dillon Lombardi captured the 172-pound title at the Carlisle Classic.

Lombardi went 4-0 in the tournament, posting a pin, a technical and two major decisions. The Blue Bomber champion registered a 14-5 win in his championship bout.

Derek King placed second at 152, gaining a pin and two decisions to reach the finals, where he dropped a narrow 4-2 decision.

Palmerton, which ended fourth out of 21 schools in the team standings, also received a fourth from Dillon Anthony at 160, and sixth-place finishes from Connor Messinger (114), Josh Merkel (133), Aidan Ortiz (139) and Braden Strohl (189).

GIRLS WRESTLING

North Penn Invitational

Palmerton’s Cassidy Merkel posted a 4-2 record at the North Penn 4th Annual Girls Invitational.

Merkel, at 124 pounds, had two pins and a technical fall among her wins.

Skylar Benninger went 2-2 at 130 with both her win pins, as did Lea Schaible at 136.

Forty schools competed in the tournament.
