High-speed chase in Polk Twp.
A Blakeslee man faces over 30 charges after he led police on a high-speed chase in Polk Township.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Matthew Lento of the Pennsylvania State Police barracks at Lehighton in the case against David Frantz Jr.:
At around 4:55 p.m. Nov. 29, Lento was parked at the intersection of Gilbert Road and Fairgrounds Road when he observed a motorcycle stop at the posted stop sign and accelerate on Gilbert Road traveling north toward Route 209.
Lento queried the registration plate on the motorcycle, which revealed the registration expired on Feb. 28, 2019, and observed the motorcycle proceed through the intersection then turn left onto Long Mountain Road.
The operator of the motorcycle, Frantz, 42, began to travel at a high rate of speed and Lento observed the motorcycle cross the solid double line and pass a motorist traveling north on Long Mountain Road.
Lento activated his lights and sirens but the motorcycle failed to yield and continued to travel at a high rate of speed and repeatedly crossed the solid double yellow lines.
The motorcycle failed to stop at the posted stop sign on Long Mountain Road and continued north onto High Hill Road, where it continued north while crossing the solid double yellow line and passed several motorists who were stopped on High Hill Road at its intersection with Pheasant Run Road.
The motorcycle failed to stop at the stop sign and turned left onto Pheasant Run Road, then crossed over the fog line, exited the roadway and continued through a field.
Frantz attempted to ride from the field onto Burger Hollow Road when the motorcycle became disabled.
Lento observed Frantz, who was not wearing a helmet or protective eye equipment, start run across the field and ran after him. Lento said, “State police, stop” as Frantz continued to run toward the woods. While chasing Frantz, Lento observed him fall in the wood line and took him into custody without incident.
Lento brought Frantz back to his patrol vehicle, where trooper Theodore Wilson searched Frantz and discovered a black container in his pocket.
Inside the container was a clear container that contained methamphetamine and a clear glass smoking device containing drug residue.
Wilson provided Lento with Frantz’s wallet and Lento positively identified him.
Lento read Frantz his rights and he agreed to questioning.
While on scene, Lento queried Frantz’s vehicle’s registration plate through JNET, which comes back to a Harley-Davidson; the vehicle was identified as a Yamaha.
Frantz did not have insurance on the motorcycle and an inspection sticker was not displayed. Upon further inspection of the motorcycle, trooper Justin Magluilo observed it to have an obliterated vehicle identification number.
While speaking with Frantz, Lento observed indicators of impairment. Frantz was unsure of his footing and seemed dazed, so Lento asked him if he used controlled substances, which Frantz stated he used methamphetamine and marijuana before operating the vehicle.
Frantz agreed to submit to a blood test.
He faces charges on nine counts of disregard traffic lane; two counts each of duties at stop signs and failing to signal; and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude officer, flight to avoid apprehension, resist arrest, disposition of vehicle or vehicle part, intentional possession of controlled substance by person not registered, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under influence of alcohol/controlled substance, reckless driving, careless driving, driving at safe speed, pass when prohibited, state vehicle registration expired (60 days), registration card not signed, display plate card in improper vehicle, operating vehicle without valid inspection, operating vehicle without required financial responsibility, use improper class of license, no eye protection device and not wearing proper headgear on motorcycle.
Frantz is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Thursday before District Judge Jamie Levy of Marshalls Creek.
