Lansford woman collecting coats to keep kids warm

A Lansford woman wants children to have warm coats this winter, remembering her son 10 years after his death.

Gabrielle Crothers started a coat drive for the children she sees at the bus stop outside her home in the Lansford Midrise, in memory of her son, David, who died tragically in June 2014.

She always wanted to do something in his memory, and she recalled an act of kindness he performed when he was just 9 years old.

David gave another child — who was always being bullied and never had a jacket — his coat on a bitter morning, she said.

When Crothers noticed her son not wearing a jacket as he was leaving the house for school, she asked him, “Where’s your coat?”

David told her what happened, and she said that she couldn’t even be mad at him for such a kind and caring gesture.

Now, in his memory, Crothers wants other children to stay warm this winter, she said.

“Let’s make sure no child in Lansford is cold without a jacket this winter,” Crothers wrote in a post on Nextdoor, announcing the collection.

She is asking people to drop off coats after 3 p.m. at the Lansford Midrise through next Monday. She needs at least another 10 girls’ coats and another 10 boys’ coats, she said.

People have donated more than two dozen girls’ coats, six boys’ jackets and even some coats for smaller children and babies, she said.

Crothers also has donations of women’s coats for the moms she sees at the bus stop — also not wearing jackets, she said.

Crothers plans to give the coats away at the bus stops in town every Wednesday morning through Thanksgiving.

She thanks everyone who has donated and helping to ensure children have warm coats this winter season.

Anyone who would like more information about donations can contact her at 717-250-3244.
