Familiar faces in Lehigh districts
Two Lehigh and Northampton County legislators in the Times News coverage area won Tuesday’s General Elections in Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ races in the 183rd and 187th districts.
Rep. Zach Mako of Lehigh Township was the winner of the 183rd District race while Gary Day won the 187th District balloting. Both men are Republicans.
183rd District
Mako, who defeated fellow Republican Zachari R. Halkais of Slatington in the primary, defeated Democrat Joseph W. Lenzi, a salesman from Northampton, in Tuesday’s balloting.
The lawmaker tallied 25,343 votes, while Lenzi had 13,271.
“I’m super grateful people of the 183rd allowed me to represent them in Harrisburg,” Mako said. “I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and am thankful to them for putting their trust in me again.”
The district includes parts of Lehigh County, including the townships of Lowhill and North Whitehall and the Borough of Slatington, and parts of Northampton County, including the townships of Allen, East Allen, Lehigh and Moore (part of Beersville and Klecknersville districts), and the boroughs of Bath, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport.
Mako was unopposed in 2022. His victory Tuesday grants him a fifth two-year term.
187th District
Day’s victory yesterday came over Democrat Stefanie Rafes of Lower Macungie Township. The margin was 21,744 to 17,516.
The win will return the Heidelberg Township resident to the House after a two-year absence. In 2022, redistricting put Republicans Ryan Mackenzie and Day in the same district, with Mackenzie winning that nomination over Day and the succeeding General Election. With Mackenzie seeking the 7th Congressional District position on Tuesday, it opened the door for Day.
Before his life in public office, Day was the director of marketing and human resources for Service Electric Cablevision and the executive assistant to the Allentown mayor. Rafes is a physician assistant.
The district includes parts of Lehigh County, including the townships of Heidelberg, Lower Macungie, Lynn, Upper Macungie (part, Districts 3, 7 and 8), Washington and Weisenberg, and the boroughs of Alburtis and Macungie.
All votes are unofficial.
