Crews respond to brush fire in Slatington
Crews from multiple counties responded to a brush fire Thursday afternoon in Slatington.
Borough fire Chief Rob Reph said firefighters were dispatched at 2:23 p.m. for a brush fire that broke out in the woods behind the Slatington Borough garage.
“There was heavy smoke to the rear in the woods, and we immediately called for more manpower and also the Lehigh County Forestry Task Force,” Reph said. “It was a pretty large area, very rough terrain, we didn’t want to send anybody into some of the parts because of safety concerns. We ended up having a dozer come in and cut a fire line around the perimeter.”
Reph said crews had the brush fire 80 percent contained around 8 p.m., then 100 percent contained around 9:30 p.m. when they pulled everybody out.
He said crews were back at the scene as of 9 a.m. to clear up any hot spots and to get all the hoses out of there.
Reph said no one was injured, as the area that was affected was essentially the wildland area and didn’t damage any structures or residential areas.
He said the cause of the fire is currently under fire investigation by the Department of Community and Natural Resources.
Reph said also assisting at the scene were Diamond Fire Company in Walnutport, Emerald Fire Company, Friedens Fire Company, Slatedale Fire Company, Lehigh County Forestry Task Force, Neffs Fire Company, Schnecksville Fire Company, Tri-Clover Fire Company, Greenawalds Fire Company, Germansville Fire Company, Lehigh Township Fire Company, Palmerton Fire Department, Bowmanstown Fire Department, Aquashicola Fire Department, East Penn Township Fire Department, North Penn Goodwill, Bucks County Forestry Crew, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, units from Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services and Macungie Rehab, Lehigh County Rehab 101, Woodlawn Rehab, the Lehigh County Drone Team, and Coplay standing by at Emerald Fire House.
“I’d like to thank everybody that assisted,” he said. “It takes a lot of time and resources to do what we do, and we really appreciate everyone coming together in our time of need.”
Reph stressed that under such dry conditions, it doesn’t take much for brush fires to break out.
“Please don’t discard any cigarettes out your windows because any little thing can start a brush fire,” he said. “Please be mindful of throwing trash as well because something even as simple as a glass bottle could start a brush fire in direct sunlight.”
