3 races open for Congress

Voters in the Times News coverage areas of Carbon, Schuylkill, Monroe, Lehigh and Northampton counties will participate in at-large voting for three people to fill seats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, Nov. 5, when voting takes place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There are contested races in the 7th, 8th and 9th congressional districts that give voters choices when they go to the polls.

7th District

In addition to all of Carbon County, the 7th District includes all of Lehigh and Northampton counties and part of Monroe County, including the townships of Eldred, Polk and some of Ross.

Three-term Congresswoman Susan Wild is the Democratic candidate, who will face Republican Ryan Mackenzie of Lower Macungie Township.

Wild, who became the first woman to be appointed Allentown City solicitor, is also the first woman to be elected in the 7th District, where she succeeded Rep. Charlie Dent.

State Rep. Mackenzie represents the 187th Legislative District in the state’s House of Representatives. He defeated two GOP challengers in the May primary: Kevin W. Dellicker of Heidelberg Township, who also lost in the 2022 GOP primary to Lisa Scheller; and Maria Montero of Easton, formerly of Summit Hill.

Before being elected to his state office, Mackenzie served as the director of policy at the state Department of Labor and Industry, where he worked on issues relating to unemployment compensation reform, workers’ compensation insurance, the Uniform Construction Code and workforce development.

8th District

The 8th District includes all of Lackawanna, Pike and Wayne counties and parts of Luzerne and Monroe counties, in the townships of Barrett, Chestnuthill, Coolbaugh, Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Price and part of Ross.

Veteran Democratic Congressman Matt A. Cartwright of Moosic will face Republican challenger Robert P. Bresnahan Jr.

Cartwright has served in the U.S. House since January 2013, including at one time representing Carbon County. Bresnahan is a venture capitalist who founded RPB Ventures, a company that develops, rehabilitates, builds and markets properties.

9th District

The 9th District includes all of Bradford, Columbia, Lebanon, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Sullivan and Wyoming counties and parts of Berks, Luzerne and Lycoming counties.

Republican Congressman Dan Meuser of Jackson Township will face Democratic challenger Amanda R. Waldman of Mill Creek Township in November. This will be a rematch of the 2022 campaign, in which Meuser won 209,185 to 92,622.

Meuser was first elected to Congress in 2018 and previously served as the secretary of revenue in the Cabinet of former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett. He also formerly represented all of Carbon County before the House boundaries were redistricted.

Waldman is a financial representative in the Medicare industry.
