Record-setting day for hurdlers

Northern Lehigh's Darby Pender had a good feeling coming into the final regular season track meet of her career.

It even got better when Palmerton's Madison Martinez exchanged some friendly motivating words with Pender before both competitors raced in the 300 meter hurdles.Pender and Martinez pushed each other to the limit in the 300, and both area athletes had a day they would never forget. The finish between the senior Bulldog and the sophomore Bomber was so close, it came to a judge's decision. The call went in Pender's favor, but both walked away with one for the record books. The time set on both stopwatches (47.8 seconds) broke each of their respective school records for that event."I'm definitely lost for words," Pender said. "I thank God for that amazing race. At the beginning of the day, I was like, 'There's something about today where I feel like I'm going to get the record.' I'm just so ecstatic right now. I'm a senior, and this is my last meet running on this track. I'm just so thankful it happened on my home track."In addition to Pender's memorable dash to the finish, her team earned a sweep of both Palmerton and Bangor in the Colonial League girls meet."I do see a lot of potential in our team," Pender said. "They're working hard this season, and they can keep pushing themselves to set themselves up for greatness."I'm going to encourage them to do their best, and just try to do their best at all times, and of course have fun with it."The Blue Bombers walked away with a split in both the boys and girls results, while the Bulldogs got swept in the boys' meet.Martinez went on to push Pender to the limit again in the 100 hurdles. While it didn't end in the same dramatic fashion, the conversation between Pender and Martinez led to a great day."We said to each other before our race, 'Let's beat our school's records today,' and we did it," said Martinez, who settled for second place in both hurdling events to Pender. "I'm so proud of her, because it's like her Senior Night, and last time running on her home track. She has been so nice to me. I always look forward to racing Darby. It pushes you to be a better person, and better at your events."Now, the table is set for them to compete in the league championships, which are set for next Tuesday and Wednesday."I want the energy and the emotion I'm feeling right now to carry through to leagues," Pender said. "I'm going to push myself. I'm going to do my best to shave some seconds off my time. I keep PRing each meet."I'm going to try and do that. I'm going to be racing against Madison again. Hopefully, we get to push ourselves again, but I'm hoping to keep the energy up for leagues."RECORD DAY ...Ashley Hankee previously held the 300-meter hurdles mark for Northern Lehigh, while Tara Moyer held the Palmerton school record in the same event.SIMPLY ON ...Palmerton's Mike Stasko (100, 200, 300H, 400 relay) and Northern Lehigh's Jill Olewine (100 200, long jump, triple jump) both won all four events they were in.TWICE AS NICE ...Northern Lehigh's Jackie Ni (shot put, discus) and Pender (100H, 300H) finished with multiple first-place finishes, while Palmerton's Jake Martinez took home two individual first-place finishes and ran a leg in the Bombers winning 1600 relay. Madison Martinez fell short of a win in the 300 hurdles, but ran a leg in the Bombers winning the 400 and 1600 relays. Bomber teammates Brianna Brennan (800) and Destiny Mokshefski (400) also both ran a leg in the winning 400 relay.BOYSPalmerton 93, Northern Lehigh 53Bangor 81 1/2, Palmerton 68 1/2Bangor 107, Northern Lehigh 43100 -1.
