Schuylkill woman charged after children test for drugs

State police used Narcan to save the life of a 3-year-old boy who tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Police said the incident happened in June on the 1000 block of Walnut Street in Ashland.

As a result, Nikki Marie Rehrig, 30, was charged with endangering the welfare of children.

Police said toxicology reported showed the boy and two other children who were in the home had the controlled substances in their systems.

Police were summoned to the home at 8 p.m. June 22 for a report of a 3-year-old struggling to breathe. They said emergency medical services personnel arrived on scene and began life saving measures, giving the boy 0.4 milligrams of Narcan, and his condition immediately began to improve. He was rushed to the emergency room at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pottsville. They said toxicology results revealed the boy had the drugs in him.

Police said employees of the Schuylkill County Office of Children and Youth Services responded to the hospital and took custody of a 7-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy and the 3-year-old.

Hospital tests showed all three were positive for fentanyl.

The police report does not indicate whether or not Rehrig is the mother of the children.
