‘She enjoyed her time in the Marines’
If you see Doris Moyer, chances are she’ll be wearing her United States Marine Corps cap.
Moyer, a resident of Maple Shade Meadows Senior Living in Nesquehoning, served with the Marines during the Korean War and wears her hat often.
“She enjoyed her time in the Marines,” said her son, Dan Moyer.
Doris grew up in Hamburg, and was raised by her grandmother, whom she called “Mammy.”
Dan said that Doris enjoyed playing with her cousins in Hamburg. She’d ride her bike and play with paper dolls during those carefree days.
But when she was 13 years old, her Mammy died. At that point, Dan said, she was raised by her aunt.
Doris dropped out of school when she reached the ninth grade.
“She joined up with the Marines in 1951 and served in Camp Lejeune as a post office worker during the Korean War,” Dan said.
She earned the rank of corporal, he said.
“She is very proud to have served,” said Amanda Billig, an employee at Maple Shade Meadows.
Dan said that after her service, Doris earned her GED. She became a licensed practical nurse, and drove for the Hokendauqua Ambulance Corps.
She married the late Kenneth Moyer, and also has a daughter, Rebecca Sullivan.
Doris was very active in her church and its women’s group, and loved to sing in the choir, Dan said.
“I have always known her to be a true servant and she has helped many in need,” Dan said. “She is a true patriot and she is very proud of her service.”
