Carbon fair extends into Sunday
This week has been a bit soggy for the 25th annual Carbon County Fair.
The junk car race was canceled Wednesday night and officials announced the fair will be extended through Sunday to make up for the weather.
Hours Sunday will be noon to 8 p.m.
Country music still filled the air Wednesday night.
Joe Bonson and Coffee Run performed on the Main Stage with a good many in the audience under the big tent and out of the sprinkles.
Off to the side in a special covered section sat Fair Queen Jocelyn Motola of Palmerton; Chasity Kibler of Lehighton, the runner-up; and Daphne Gowin of Lehighton, Junior Miss, enjoying the music.
“It’s been good,” Motola said about the fair. “The weather has just not been so good.”
Motola said she heard the weather will get better later in the week and encourages everyone to come on out.
“Come see the animals and come visit us,” she said.
Ruth Augustine said she has been coming to the fair for most of its 25-year history. She and her husband, Lyle Augustine Jr., are members of the Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club. In addition to Bowmanstown-Parryville club, the fair also is run by the Palmerton Lions, Mahoning Township Lions, Lehighton Area Lioness, Franklin Township Lions and the West Penn Township Lions.
“Monday was very, very good,” Ruth Augustine said. “The rain is not kind, but as we say it’s fair week.”
Watch tnonline.com and the fair’s Facebook page for announcements about events tonight and Friday.
The Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions are serving hot sandwiches: sausage with green peppers and onions, meatball hoagie, hot dogs with chilli, cheese or sauerkraut, cheeseburgers, and cold drinks including Moxie. Augustine said they plan to be at the upcoming West End Fair and the Palmerton Community Festival in September.
The fair is full of all sorts of fare from funnel cakes to ice cream and everything in between.
The Smiley family and their friends picked up a pizza and settled in under a dining tent. One of the moms said they came out in the misty weather to get the kids out of the house; dad had a different reason.
“We came out for food,” said Adam Smiley.
